PUBLIC HEALTH SPRING/SUMMER REMINDERS

Manitoba public health officials are encouraging Manitobans to take advantage of spring and summer by enjoying outdoor activities, increasing physical activity and eating healthy including more local fresh foods.

However, spring and summer outdoor activities can increase the risk of exposure to some infectious diseases such as West Nile virus, Lyme disease, E. coli, rabies, hantavirus and blastomycosis.

Manitobans can take precautions to reduce these risks by:

* preparing for West Nile virus season by reducing standing water around their homes;

* avoiding contact with blacklegged (deer) ticks to reduce their risk of Lyme disease;

* taking proper food-handling precautions to reduce food-borne infections;

* testing wells regularly, particularly if the well has been affected by flooding, to reduce water-borne infections;

* vaccinating pets and avoiding handling wildlife to reduce the risk of rabies;

* avoiding exposure to mouse droppings to reduce the risk of hantavirus infections; and

* being aware of the risk for exposure to blastomycosis from fungal spores found in soil in risk areas.

More information about health issues is available online from Manitoba Health

Manitoba Conservation is planning to commence work on redevelopment of the West Hawk Lake Townsite Road in the fall of 2011.  The following documents are display boards from the public presentations regarding this project.

From Manitoba Conservation:

The Mantario Trail - Updated May 30 - A portion of the Mantario Hiking Trail from Big Whiteshell to Mantario Cabin is now open for travel. The remainder of the trail from Mantario Cabin to Caddy Lake remains closed due to severe wind damage that occurred in late July, 2010. Fallen trees are blocking approximately 40 kilometres of the trail, making safe passage for hiking impossible. MantarioTrail Map

The Mantario Hiking Trail is approximately 60 kms long and is a challenge for even the most experienced hiker.  Summer of 2010 saw higher than normal precipitation in southern Manitoba, which made access and efforts to repair and clean-up the trail very difficult.  Manitoba Conservation staff resumed clean-up  efforts in the fall of 2010, but again challenging weather conditions, difficult access and high water levels, led to unsafe working conditions and the suspension of clean-up efforts. An Ariel Survey  of the Mantario Trail was done in the spring of 2011 and further assessment was made. Conservation staff are currently deployed on flood protection  duty.  Trail clean-up will resume once flood protection efforts have been concluded.
Thank you for your understanding.

Manitoba Conservation has submitted application for environmental licensing of an ATV trail system in Duck Mountain Provincial Park.  The WCA has been informed that there are no plans to develop such a system in the Whiteshell Provincial Park.  Cottagers are reminded that ATV use is generally not allowed in the Park.  There are plans to establish more specific guidlines for clarification.  For example, businesses will be exempted and ATV use is allowed in hunting (for game retrieval only).  Any other use of ATVs in the Park will be by special permit only.  Let us know your views.
